Tattoo Removal Cost: US Cities Compared
You got a quote. Now you're wondering if $350 a session is normal, or whether the city you live in is part of the problem. Short answer: it's both, and neither.
Across nine US cities โ Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, Austin, Denver, Las Vegas, San Antonio, Chicago, and Orlando โ the per-session floor is consistent. The ceiling is where they diverge, and the gap within a city is often larger than the gap between cities.
All figures are in USD and come from real clinic listings on the Tattoo Removal Guide directory (as of July 2026), reflecting the P10โP90 middle band of published "from" prices.
The nine-city table
| City | Typical range (P10โP90) | Within-city spread | Priced listings (n) | Free consult |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Houston, TX | $200โ$350/session | 1.8ร | 15 of 76 (30%) | 22% |
| Austin, TX | $200โ$350/session | 1.8ร | 12 of 51 (33%) | 27% |
| San Antonio, TX | $200โ$295/session | n<5 โ indicative only | 4 of 40 (10%) | 28% |
| Dallas, TX | $200โ$650/session | 3.2ร | 19 of 69 (35%) | 32% |
| Chicago, IL | $200โ$350/session | 1.8ร | 20 of 57 (39%) | 28% |
| Denver, CO | $200โ$450/session | 2.3ร | 28 of 65 (46%) | 43% |
| Las Vegas, NV | $200โ$500/session | 2.5ร | 25 of 101 (38%) | 26% |
| Phoenix, AZ | $200โ$550/session | 2.8ร | 24 of 117 (26%) | 28% |
| Orlando, FL | $200โ$800/session | 4ร | 10 of 30 (43%) | 33% |
Three things stand out from this table.
The floor is identical. Every city shares a $200 per-session starting point for the smallest published jobs. Moving from Houston to Las Vegas does not change what the cheapest option in either city costs.
The ceiling is where markets split. Orlando's typical band reaches $800. Houston, Austin, and Chicago all stay tight at $350. That's a 2.3ร difference between the widest and narrowest ceilings in this group โ though Orlando's small sample (10 priced listings) makes its band less stable than the larger cities'. The story is more about clinic mix and sample size than geography.
Most clinics don't publish a price. Across these nine cities, between 10% and 46% of listed clinics publish a starting price โ San Antonio at the low end, Denver at the high. The typical ranges above reflect only those that do. A published "from" price is the price of the simplest possible job; it is not your quote.
Why the ceilings differ
The laser technology doesn't explain it. Picosecond and Q-switched machines are both used in all nine cities, and both are effective. The right choice depends on your tattoo's colours and depth, not which city you're in โ a consultation will identify what your tattoo needs.
What moves the ceiling:
Clinic mix. Dallas has more specialist-rated clinics (T1โT2 tier) in the directory than any other Texas city here โ 13 out of 69. Higher-credentialled practitioners, especially those with formal medical training in removal, set higher rates. That pulls the ceiling up.
Market size vs. competition. Phoenix has the most listed clinics of the nine (117), yet its typical range still reaches $550. More listings don't compress the upper end; they extend it in both directions. Las Vegas runs 101 clinics and a similar $500 ceiling.
Price transparency. Denver publishes prices more often than any other city here โ 46% of its 65 listed clinics list a starting figure. That transparency reflects competitive pressure to convert online, not a lower cost floor. Orlando at 43% is the second most transparent; San Antonio at 10% the least.
Operating costs. A premium medspa in Scottsdale runs different overheads from a clinic in a Houston suburb. Some ceiling variation between cities is legitimate cost structure.
City by city
Houston
76 clinics listed, 9 specialist-rated (as of July 2026). 30% publish a price. Payment plans available at 28% of clinics. Suburbs (The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland) extend options without shifting the range.
Austin
51 clinics, tied with Houston and Chicago for the tightest spread of the group: $200โ$350 (1.8ร, n=12). Austin has the highest picosecond-capable proportion here โ 25% โ and the median published price sits at $225, just above the floor. Most priced Austin clinics appear to compete on that published number.
San Antonio
40 clinics, only 4 publish a starting price โ too small a sample for a reliable P10-P90. The $200โ$295 range is shown for reference but treat it as indicative only. What the directory does show: 28% offer a free consult and 38% offer payment plans. If you're in San Antonio, a consultation is the most reliable way to get a real number.
Dallas
69 clinics, one of the widest typical spreads in this comparison: $200โ$650 (3.2ร, n=19). Dallas has the most specialist-rated clinics of the nine cities โ 13 โ and a strong free-consult rate at 32%. The observed max reaches $2,030 (one outlier), but the typical ceiling at $650 is the meaningful number for most people comparing quotes.
Chicago
57 clinics, tied for the tightest typical range of the nine: $200โ$350 (1.8ร, n=20). Chicago publishes prices more often than most โ 39% โ and that transparency shows: an 1.8ร spread means most published quotes are competing directly with each other. Suburbs in Naperville, Schaumburg, and Evanston extend the options.
Denver
65 clinics and the most price-transparent of the nine: 46% publish a price, and 43% offer a free consultation. Typical range $200โ$450 (2.3ร, n=28). Denver's transparency reflects a competitive local market where listing a price is a conversion tool. The suburbs (Lakewood, Westminster, Aurora, Englewood) are well-represented in the directory.
Las Vegas
101 clinics, typical $200โ$500 (2.5ร, n=25). Las Vegas has a notable proportion of colour-removal-capable listings in this group (14%). If you're a visitor booking near the Strip, expect prices toward the ceiling; residential clinics in Henderson and North Las Vegas trend toward the floor. Payment plans available at 23% of clinics.
Phoenix
117 clinics โ the largest dataset in this comparison โ typical $200โ$550 (2.8ร, n=24). The suburban spread (Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Peoria, Surprise) is the widest of the nine. That size means genuine options across the full price band, and a wider range of practitioner experience levels. Payment plans at 28% of clinics.
Orlando
30 clinics โ the smallest market here โ typical $200โ$800 (4ร, n=10). With only 10 priced listings, this band is the least stable of the nine: a single high-priced clinic can pull the whole ceiling up in a market this thin. Like Las Vegas, Orlando is partially tourism-facing: clinics near major corridors tend toward the ceiling, while those farther out trend toward the floor. A free consultation (available at 33% of Orlando clinics) matters more in a thin-data market.
What the per-session price doesn't tell you
The number that matters is total-course cost: per-session price multiplied by estimated session count.
Most tattoos need 8โ12 sessions, spaced over the 6โ8 week clearing window the immune system requires between treatments. A course at $200 a session over 12 sessions totals $2,400. The same tattoo at $350 a session finishing in 8 sessions totals $2,800 โ the cheaper per-session option costs more.
Colour complicates the estimate. Greens, blues, and teals are harder to clear regardless of laser type; professional ink sits deeper than amateur work and adds sessions. A published "from" price is calibrated to the simplest possible job, not yours.
Scarring from laser removal is rare but real. Aggressive treatment on the wrong skin type, or sessions spaced too tightly, can leave texture changes. A dramatically low quote without explanation is worth a question before you commit.
Which is right for you
No city here is categorically cheaper. Every one shares a $200 floor; every one has clinics at multiples of it. The within-city spread (1.8รโ4ร) is usually larger than the city-to-city difference โ meaning the second quote in your own city matters more than which city you live in.
Three rules that apply everywhere:
Get two quotes in the same city. A within-city spread as wide as 4ร (Orlando) means the second quote for identical work could come in at a fraction of the first.
Ask for a completion estimate upfront. Per-session pricing is only useful if you know the session count. A free consult (available at 22%โ46% of clinics in these cities) will give you that number.
Read "from" prices as a floor. Published prices apply to the smallest, simplest job. Your tattoo will likely sit above it โ and a consultation is the only way to know by how much.

The spread you see within these cities is real โ and it's larger than the spread between them. Check what clinics near you charge before the consult โ no clinic pays to rank higher on the directory, and no leads are sold.
