US Metro Tattoo Removal Cost Index (2026): The Citable Data Edition
Two clinics inside the same US city can quote you a price that's anywhere from 1.5x to 4.2x apart, for the same small tattoo. This page is a US-focused, structured-data companion to TRG's cost-index coverage. It tracks the typical per-session price spread across nine major US metros using every clinic in the directory that publishes a price, winsorised to the middle 80%, and stamped with the snapshot date so you know exactly what you're reading.
All figures: source: tattooremoval.guide directory, as of July 2026.
The headline finding
The US market shares one consistent price floor: nearly every metro starts at around $200 per session for a small tattoo. What varies is the ceiling, and the spread is widest in Miami (4.2ร) and Dallas (2.8ร), tightest in Chicago (1.5ร) and Austin (1.7ร). In absolute dollars, that means the difference between the cheapest and the 90th-percentile clinic runs from about $105 in Chicago to $631 in Miami, before you've multiplied by 8 to 12 sessions.
Analyst note โ named basis: All per-city figures are computed from the TRG directory via
scripts/city-stats.py, restricted to US clinics, as of the July 2026 data snapshot. Figures represent each clinic's lowest advertised "from" per-session rate. Winsorisation method: the 10th and 90th percentile of priced clinics per city (P10โP90 typical band); the observed full range is footnoted. Computed by the TRG data team (tattooremoval.guide). See full methodology below.
Typical per-session price by US metro
Each city's typical range is the P10โP90 band, the range covering the middle 80% of clinics that publish a price. Trimming the extremes matters: one very cheap introductory offer or one premium package clinic can otherwise skew the picture badly. The full observed minimum and maximum are in the footnote.
| Metro | State | Typical per session (P10โP90) | Spread | Priced clinics (n) | Median "from" price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chicago | IL | $200โ$305 | 1.5ร | 20 | $212 |
| Austin | TX | $200โ$345 | 1.7ร | 12 | $225 |
| Houston | TX | $200โ$350 | 1.8ร | 15 | $200 |
| New York | NY | $200โ$420 | 2.1ร | 34 | $200 |
| Denver | CO | $200โ$432 | 2.2ร | 28 | $200 |
| Las Vegas | NV | $200โ$479 | 2.4ร | 25 | $250 |
| Phoenix | AZ | $200โ$505 | 2.5ร | 24 | $200 |
| Dallas | TX | $200โ$569 | 2.8ร | 19 | $200 |
| Miami | FL | $200โ$831 | 4.2ร | 10 | $228 |

What the numbers say
The floor is consistent; the ceiling is not
Every metro here starts at $200 per session. That floor reflects US market structure โ operating costs, consumables, and how US clinics tend to price single-session versus package rates. The relevant question isn't which city is cheapest (they're all the same at the bottom), but how far up the ceiling goes in your city.
Chicago and Austin have tight markets: the 90th percentile sits at $305 and $345 respectively, so even a high-end clinic is within reach. Miami is a different story. Its P90 of $831 means that if you call around Miami without comparing prices, you could land in a clinic charging four times what the next one over quotes for the same procedure. That's not a rounding error; it's a $4,000โ$6,300 difference over a full course.
The 10-session maths
Most tattoos take 8โ12 sessions to clear, spaced roughly 6โ8 weeks apart (the clearing window your immune system needs to flush the fragmented ink between treatments). A per-session price is therefore a multiplier.
At a Houston median of $200 a session, a 10-session course totals $2,000. At Houston's P90 of $350, the same course is $3,500. That $1,500 gap isn't visible in any individual session quote. The same maths in Miami: $2,000 at the median, or up to $8,310 at the 90th percentile. For most tattoos, the clinic you pick matters more than any other single variable.
Why prices in the same city differ so much
The within-city spread is real, not a data artefact. Legitimate drivers include laser type (clinics that have invested in newer equipment often price differently), operator experience and training, location and overheads, and how a clinic packages single sessions versus courses. A large part of the gap is also simply pricing strategy โ different clinics target different parts of the market. There's no single "correct" price for tattoo removal; there's only the range, and your job is to know where in it you're sitting.
Price transparency is lower than you'd expect
Across these nine metros, the share of clinics that actually publish a price ranges from 16% in Miami (10 of 61 listed clinics) to 43% in Denver (28 of 65 listed clinics). The table above covers only the minority that do list. The majority operate on a "call for a quote" basis, usually because price depends on tattoo size, ink colour, depth, and how many sessions the clinician estimates. Treat the ranges above as the visible market; the full market is wider.
Pooling all nine metros: only 26% of clinics publish a price at all (187 of 715 listed, as of July 2026) โ notably lower than the 38% directory-wide average across all five countries this directory covers. Large US metros, in other words, are more consultation-gated than the directory as a whole.
A note on laser technology
Picosecond and Q-switched lasers are both effective and both widely used across these markets. Across these nine metros, about 20% of listed clinics note picosecond technology and 14% note Q-switched (as of July 2026); directory-wide across all five countries, the equivalent figures are 18% and 15%. Neither is categorically superior โ the right choice depends on your ink colours and skin type, and that's a consultation question, not a city-level one. A higher price doesn't guarantee the laser is matched to your tattoo; ask specifically which system a clinic uses and why.
Methodology
- Source. All figures are computed from the Tattoo Removal Guide directory using
scripts/city-stats.py, restricted to US clinics, from the July 2026 data snapshot. TRG is an independent directory: no clinic pays to rank higher, and no leads are sold. - Clinics included. All clinics in the TRG directory for each metro, including suburbs within the broader metro area (e.g. Scottsdale and Tempe within Phoenix, Fort Worth and Plano within Dallas).
- Price figures. Each clinic's lowest advertised "from" per-session price in USD, where published. Clinics that don't list a price are excluded from the price analysis; the priced-clinic count (n) is shown per city.
- Typical range (P10โP90). The 10th-to-90th-percentile band of priced clinics per metro. This is the range a real person ringing around would encounter, with the cheapest introductory offers and the most expensive premium clinics trimmed. P10/P90 endpoints are rounded to the nearest $10.
- Observed range. The full minimum and maximum are footnoted for transparency. These are outlier-prone, often one introductory-price clinic or one premium single-session package, and aren't the headline figure.
- Spread multiplier. P90 รท P10, rounded to one decimal place.
- Median. The exact median "from" price across priced clinics in that metro (not rounded).
- Currency. All figures are USD. No cross-country comparison is made; this index covers US metros only.
- Drift. Directory figures are point-in-time (as of July 2026) and change as clinics are added and owners correct their listings. Always read the live listing for any clinic you're considering.
- Named analyst. Figures compiled by the TRG data team, tattooremoval.guide.

Commercial disclosure
Tattoo Removal Guide is an independent directory. No clinic pays to rank higher in search results or city listings. No leads are sold to clinics. Figures in this index are computed from voluntary listing data โ clinics choose whether to publish a price, and roughly three-quarters in this dataset do not. This report describes the visible, price-publishing segment of each market; it's a floor estimate, not a census of every clinic in any metro. TRG earns revenue from premium listing subscriptions; that has no effect on ranking or inclusion in this index.
