Tattoo removal recovery timeline — session by session

The first 24 hours: immediate response
Within minutes of treatment, the skin will show a whitish frosting effect as gas bubbles form from shattered ink particles. This typically fades within 30 minutes. Over the next few hours, expect increasing redness, swelling, and warmth in the treated area — similar to a sunburn. Some people develop small blisters within the first 12–24 hours. This is all normal and indicates the laser has effectively targeted the ink. Apply the dressing provided by your clinic and keep the area clean.
Days 2 to 7: peak healing
The first week is when most active healing occurs. Blistering may increase in the first 2–3 days before gradually resolving. Scabbing may begin around day 3–5 as blisters dry out. The area may feel itchy — resist the urge to scratch or pick. Keep the area moisturised with the products your clinic recommends, continue wearing loose clothing over the treated area, and avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas.
Weeks 2 to 4: resolution
Most surface healing is complete within 2–4 weeks. Scabs will fall away naturally, revealing pink or slightly lighter skin underneath. The treated area may look temporarily lighter or darker than surrounding skin — this is usually temporary. You can typically resume normal activities, including exercise, after the first 2 weeks. Continue applying sunscreen to the area whenever it's exposed to sunlight.
Take photos of your tattoo before each session and at the 4-week mark after treatment. This creates a visual record of your progress that's much more reliable than memory.
Weeks 4 to 8: immune clearance
Even after the surface has healed, your immune system continues working beneath the skin to clear the shattered ink particles. This is why visible fading often continues for weeks after a session — and why sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart. You may notice the most dramatic fading between weeks 4 and 8. The skin's colour and texture should return close to normal during this period, preparing you for the next session.
Long-term recovery across your treatment course
Over the full course of treatment (6–12+ sessions over 1–2 years), cumulative fading builds progressively. Early sessions often produce the most visible change, with later sessions yielding more subtle improvements as the remaining ink becomes thinner. Most people find that after their treatment course is complete, the treated skin settles to its final state within 3–6 months. Any residual colour changes typically continue to improve during this period.
